"Paul Epic: South of Heaven, North of Hell"
By Jake A. Wheat

Welcome to the hardest music review I have ever had to write.  I don’t want to come across as overly excited, and I don’t want to start bringing out the same old cliché terms for something awesome.  I have been trying desperately to figure out how to get my thoughts onto this computer screen for what seems like weeks now, and alas I am going to pull a "Drew Barrymore" movie scene, and just break down into honesty hoping that it will move you into some sort of compassionate happiness.

Introducing Paul Epic, who mildly resembles our Mack Hardcore mascot, and is ultimately why I checked out his MySpace profile online. This strange twist of fate had me discover what I consider to be one of the best musicians hands down.  I was more intrigued at first by how photogenic and artistic his overall image was marketed, but once I discovered his album on iTunes I quickly jumped on the BUY button and hit the road with my iPod.  His music is equally stunning, toned, and - beautiful.

Traveling down I-65 South is a nightmare to begin with during the holidays, and raging through traffic with one foot on the gas and the other on my play list button (I created a Paul Epic play list for easy access) and started from the beginning.  Paul’s album is called "South of Heaven, North of Hell" and is proudly stamped with Paul’s name, instead of a generic band title or some form of insignia.  In other words, Paul has signed his name to an entire album, and has taken the step off of the Indie music plank into that abyss of confidence vs. ego.

Ego?  Did we say ego?  Paul Epic is far from egotistical, which can be found in other "self titled" albums on the Indie circuit.  If one has their name on an album, we believe it represents the artist on so many levels that it’s a huge risk.  Once you put your name out there, if you don’t live up to it - anything you do afterward will be represented in the same manner.  Redemption is difficult in the Indie circuit, with all the throat-cutting competition and opinionated fart squatters. Paul Epic has nothing to worry about.  Epic carries an image, brand, and musical quality that dominates into what I consider to be "mainstream" ready and very refreshing.

Paul Epic’s comes with a "100% Hardcore Certified" seal of approval, and I personally have not let the tracks quit playing on my iPod since I got the album.  Epic’s "South of Heaven, North of Hell" has stylish genre differences which I love.  Elements of my road rage were exacerbated in the song "Faster," which literally got me pulled over for speeding  near Bardstown, Kentucky doing 80 in a 65 mph zone.  Who cares?  I had Paul Epic jamming in the car, it was worth the piglet interruption. Not only that, but his music is like nitro injected gasoline and once you get started, it’s almost a crime to slow it down.  "Speed it up and make it go faster," Paul sings.  I couldn’t argue, he could kick my ass!

"Proud," which has autobiographical tones (most of the album seems to have Paul’s life represented in one form or fashion) has a heartfelt poetic score, which hits with stark contrast to the hard outer shell which at first glance may have you underestimate the complexity and emotional outpour of Epic’s lyrical styling.  In other words, Paul Epic has a hard outer shell, but opens up his heart and soul in his music where the soft underbelly is exposed and vulnerable.  This contrast is unmistakably art, without a doubt one of the greatest Indie releases we have heard to date.

This album has no tracks that you will not immediately want to hear over and over, it’s a platinum album laying in wait - trust me.  "Say You’ll Stay Tonight," is one of my favorite tracks, which allows for Epic to slow things down a bit, and pay homage to a rock ballad which has layered melodies and vocal techniques that exceed mainstream artist standards.  That doesn’t last long though, because mosh pit crunching vocals (Epic’s vocal range is amazing) comes back to give you additional reasons to break the law.

Ok, so we don’t actually support illegal activities, but we do support Paul Epic and his album "South of Heaven, North of Hell."  If you don’t have a copy of his album, you can get it on iTunes, CDBaby.com, and other online outlets.  This is a MUST HAVE purchase, and is one of the BEST of 2007/2008.  Paul Epic will be moving to the mainstream, and it’s only a matter of time before he leaves the Indie circuit, and moves on to be the man he wants to be.  It’s the man we are proud of, and support 100% of the way.

Check the links below for Paul’s MySpace, and "Buy Links."  (… and watch the speed limit….)

Psycho Josh Returns To StreetBlast Internet Radio With "Blast of Psycho"
You may remember back in 2002 when "Psycho Josh" was on UnderGroundLou.com, one of our first Internet Radio stations that played local Indie music.  Since we changed to a GLOBAL Indie resource, we eliminated our shows and streamed music 24/7.

However, the demand keeps coming for the return of Psycho Josh and his antics, so tune into StreetBlast Internet Radio nightly at 8:00 pm est. to hear Psycho Josh play a huge selection of Indie music!

His show debuts on January 8th, 2008 - and you don't want to miss it!  If you have music you want him to consider playing, please e-mail him your mp3's to: psychojosh@streetblastradio.com
